Not only is it a relaxing drink to enjoy at the end of your busy work day, but it is also the perfect drink to share with your family and friends. So what is apple cider exactly?
The word cider, or soft cider, refers to an unfiltered form of a non-alcoholic drink made from crushed apples. I know what you’re thinking: isn’t apple cider the same thing as apple juice? Technically speaking, yes. The difference is that cider contains raw properties such as pulp and fibers, while apple juice itself is filtered and typically tastes sweeter.
So, to put it in simpler terms, apple cider is a raw, pressed apple juice that has not been filtered. It’s basically the raw form of apple juice before it’s drained from its pulp and fibers. Apple cider is often enjoyed during the holidays and cooler months because you can spice it up, which gives it it a warm, cozy effect. Due to both its tartness and sweetness, cider is used for baked goods, and also tastes delicious warmed up.
What are some benefits to consuming apple cider?
Have you ever heard of the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away?” Well, this is also true for drinking apple cider. Because apple cider is the rawest form of apple juice, it contains a similar amount of nutrients as if you were eating an apple in its solid form. Apple cider is rich in antioxidants, such as flavonoids, which help fight chronic illness, cancer, and heart disease. Apples are high in fiber, which helps with indigestion and lowers cholesterol.
So let’s make this delicious apple cider recipe already!
Here is what you’ll need:
10-12 medium apples, quartered (This can be an assortment of different types of apples.)
2 oranges quartered (Feel free to peel the oranges if you perfer a sweeter cider.)
3-4 cinnamon sticks (This is flexible to your liking of spice.)
1 tablespoon whole cloves
16 cups of water
1 tsp whole all-spice
1 inch fresh ginger
1/2 cup sweetener (brown sugar, maple syrup, honey or agave)
1 whole nutmeg
Steps to take to make it all happen.
- Combine your ingredients into a large pot. This includes apples, oranges, and all of the seasonings.
- Cover with water leaving about an inch or two of space at the top of the pot.
- Let that baby simmer.
- Heat the cider over high heat until it boils. Then reduce the heat to medium-low and cover and let the heat run for 2 hours or until the apples are soft.
- Mash the apples and oranges.
- Use your spoon or potato masher to do this step. Mash against the side of the pot so the flavors continue to release.
- Cover and let it boil for another hour.
- Using a fine mesh drainer or cheese cloth, drain out all of the solids. This includes the apples and oranges by pressing them against the drainer to release all of the remaining juices.
- That’s it! Serve warm or cold.
- As a bonus, garnish the drink using fresh orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or cranberries.
Note: If stored in the refrigerator, the cider will last for five days max.
If stored in the freezer, the cider can last up to three months.
